Being a CEO without being in the spotlight: a practical guide for the media-shy leader

Imagine this: you’re a CEO. Sounds great, right? But maybe you’re not the type who wants to be in front of the camera every day, talking about how amazing your company is.

Tips & Tricks

The good news? You don’t have to be. There are plenty of ways to lead your company without constantly feeling like a Hollywood star. You can stay visible without the pressure of the media always being on your heels. So, let’s explore some tips and tricks to make an impact while staying comfortably behind the scenes.

1. Internal communication: your own safe bubble

CEOs often forget that being visible doesn’t mean you have to plaster your face everywhere. Start with your internal team. Regular team meetings are a great way to stay connected. Host informal town halls every month where you catch up with employees. You don’t need to go full Steve Jobs with a headset on stage—just keep it relaxed and approachable.

2. Build relationships without the camera

Networking doesn’t have to involve large, uncomfortable events. Instead, opt for smaller, private gatherings like intimate dinners or get-togethers with fellow CEOs. These settings allow for deeper conversations without the glare of the media. Quiet networking with strategic partners is also more effective. Skip the big press events and invite key partners for a casual lunch or coffee. These one-on-one meetings can be more productive than public spectacles.

3. Mentor without the spotlight

You can still make a huge impact without being in the media. Mentor your top leaders and invest in your management team. Let them take the spotlight while you guide from behind the scenes. Organise small leadership retreats or workshops a few times a year to share your vision and nurture future leaders in a relaxed setting.

4. Publish without the paparazzi

Sharing your thoughts doesn’t always require a camera. Write a blog or opinion piece. A well-crafted article can be just as impactful as a TV interview, and you won’t have to step foot in a studio. Trade magazines and LinkedIn are excellent platforms for showing thought leadership, offering depth and substance without the pressure of being on camera.

5. Do your CSR work quietly

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is important, but you don’t need to shout about it. Support charities and social causes behind the scenes. Let the impact speak for itself, and allow others in your organisation to shine in these projects. Your involvement doesn’t always need to be front and centre.

6. Introverted media options: comfort and control

Sometimes, you do need to engage with the media, but there are ways to do it that feel less intimidating. Podcasts, for example, offer a relaxed way to share your story. You can have meaningful conversations in a comfortable setting, like chatting over coffee—with a microphone. If live interviews feel too overwhelming, stick to written pieces. A thoughtful blog post or article can have just as much impact without the stress of being on air.

Leadership on your terms

Being a CEO doesn’t mean you have to be a charismatic public speaker in front of the camera every day. You can lead effectively and remain visible without forcing yourself into uncomfortable situations. Whether you opt for podcasts, mentoring programmes, private events, or blogs, there are plenty of ways to make an impact in your own way. The key is finding what works for you and staying true to your style. After all, leadership is about sharing your vision and driving your business forward—on your terms. So, take a breath and relax. You don’t need to be on camera every day. Just choose what suits you best and stay authentic.
